Pig: Hey, Rat, have you met my friend, Smokey the Bear? Smokey: Only you can prevent forest fires. Pig: He'd probably like it if you bought him a beer. Rat: Why should I buy him a beer? Smokey: Only you can prevent smokey going home sober. Rat: This could get annoying. Smokey: Only you can prevent Smokey going home lonely. Woman: Creep.
And remember Smokey’s real saying that the forest service doesn’t want you to know about. Only you can ensure even worse forest fires. It was a little something I learned back in school, either elementary (keep wanting to say it was a Scholastic Weekly Reader article which would have been elementary for me) or seventh grade science. By trying to prevent forest fires we’re actually both setting up conditions to ensure a much worse forest fire as well as ensuring those plants that actually need fire to release their seeds are unable to disperse their seeds.
