Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for September 11, 2011
Transcript:
Rat: Behold, I, master linguist Rat, seek to test the linguistic theory that when people don't understand a word, they automatically assume it's inappropriate. Thus, I have invented the phrase schloop schloop ping-a-pang bong,' which means, 'to play a vigorous game of 'Monopoly''. Pig, please read this note to the kind person next to you. Pig: 'Hello, ma'am. care to come home with me and schloop schloop ping-a-pang bong?' *kapishhhhhhh* Pig: Looks like someone doesn't like 'Monopoly'. Rat: 'Result inconclusive. Must test on a goat.' Goat: Check please.

Pig, try offering her some ice cream instead; the phrase for that is “rip, strip, grip, and dip.”÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷Save the oompa-loompas!

Goat definitely has the right idea! Less wear and tear on the Oompa Loompas.

This has nothing to do with the comic, so I ask for tolerance. I also realize that many of you are not from the United States, so I ask extra tolerance. Feel free to use the scroll key!
September 11,2001Ten years ago today we wept As enemies attacked. It felt as though our own blood poured: Our hearts and minds, pain-wracked.
The day was one of blood and tears Of smoke, of fire, of painOf heroes giving their own lives As ashes fell like rain.
That day all prejudice was gone As we stood side by side; Our foolish fights, our differences, Forgotten with our pride.
Can’t we leave off our rotten feuds To honor all those men?And take our neighbor by the hand, United once again?
The only we that we’ll stay strong And stand against the odds,Is mend the rifts, be once again- One nation under God!

Don’t think I’ll be signing up for “Doc” Rat’s linguistics class…. BTW, if Pig had some gumption, he could probably sue The Kind Person for assault and get big-time damages (note: NOT with “Lawyer” Rat as his attorney).

Hmmm… ‘Schloop schloop ping-a-bang bong’… For some reason, I feel oddly offended…

…and then the Rat doctor..
He told me what to do
He said that

Interesting that the sound effect is phonetically similar to the Italian for “Understand”

I’m for “gongbong humma humma”, but “schloop-schloop ping-a-pang bong” works really well for me too…

On a day of rembrance, a strip that doesn’t, is exactly why with all our human flaws, the USA is still the model for individuality. AND why even the one dimensional creeps & monsters come here, to see what it’s all about. I’m sure every once in awhile, one of them has a change of heart & mind.

I think the lack of service in this diner is what angers her. Cups of something plus empty plates are all I ever see. She didn’t even get the empty place setting or a cup. Check please?

It’s a shame that you, Stephan, could not join the almost 100 other syndicated cartoonists in somehow marking this significant day in American (and world) history. That sucks.

Wasn’t ‘Bong tiddle-tiddle Bang’ a Europolice Song contest winner? (or was that Monty Python…)

I believe that Rat’s terminology for what happened to poor Pig is “Oompa Loompa Doopity Doo”.

And Rat didn’t evven offer to kiss Pig’s Oompa Loompas to make them feel better !

I’m disappointed that Mr. Pastis didn’t commemorate 09/11 like some of the other strips did. Oh well, I guess you can’t have everything from the best strip in comics..
justrightturnips about 13 years ago
Thank you, I wasn’t trying to detract from the comic at all. It just was on my mind.@otto- no insult meant. I just didn’t want to take for granted that it mattered to everyone as much as to us. Thanks for your support. We still need it!
sandigilbo about 13 years ago
Amen. If we keep dwelling on the past or making up stories about the future, we lose this very moment. We scream at ‘their’ hatred of us, but what about our own hatred, prejudice and intolerence? We are all one and we are all connected.

“Whomps” was the word invented by “T. J.” on “Recess” to avoid Real swear words (S2/E19, 1999).

Arianne! I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter.
Congratulations to you on still being able to enjoy the person she was, alongside your grief, and not turn her memory into only a memorial to sadness.
Her humor was part of her legacy, a gift to the world, so forgetting it would be wasteful. I’m glad you choose to remember it.
And I completely agree with your last line.
Arianne about 13 years ago
Cutiepie and Susan, thank-you so much for your kind and sympathetic words. That last line was the real point I wanted to make. I’m ambivalent about using my loss to illustrate the point – it rather feels like taking the Lord’s name in vain: Thou Shalt Not! Hopefully, it wasn’t entirely in vain. It’s just that I’ve been so frustrated today by a few posters’ insistence that every comic must follow lock-step, goose-step, in a mandatory display, or else they prove themselves to be heartless and unpatriotic. That’s some odd notion of freedom!
