Goat: Do you think there will ever be peace int he Middle East? Pig: No way. Not with the way they created those countries. Goat: You mean with how they created Israel and Palestine? Pig: With how they named a country for Michael Jordan. Goat: I think you're confused. Pig: Sure, he was great. But still.

Had that Middle Eastern country always been named such before 1963 (the year of Michael’s birth)?

that land has been Israel’s for a long time off and on its just been a land in constant conflict

Well, I do agree with Pig’s first sentence in the first panel, but he looses me after that. But ultimately the Mid East is like so much of the world, not quite that peaceful historically. Even before the 20th century.

I’m still trying to figure out why the Middle East is on the other side of the continent from the Far East.

I can see naming a country after Michael Jordan. What I don’t get is why another country decided to name itself after two brands of soap: Ivory Coast.

@synp: After Trans-Jordan conquered the west bank of the Jordan River during Israel’s War for Independence, it could no longer be caalled “Trans-Jordan” and had to be re-named “Jordan.” The west Bank is still disputed rather than “occupied” territory.
And the real reason for the conflicts in the Middle East (Israel is not the major conflict) is because after World War I the diplomats who carved up the Ottoman Empire drew up boundaries irrespective of ethnicities and religious groups, i.e. Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

Israel was named for… Israel. The name literally means “He who wrestles with God”. The name was given to Jacob after an all-night wrestling match with God. Genesis 32:28. Jacob’s descendants went on to be called the “Children of Israel”.

God gave the land to His chosen people (Abram’s offspring). It has always belonged to the Israelites and was NEVER man’s to carve up and hand out!!!
Genesis 15:18-21 – On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
God said it, and that’s all there is to it.“period”

“Palestine”, as they call it, is NOT a country. It’s a section of Israel that some people want to carve out and MAKE into a country.

Well. At least Jordan is sharing their air with the rest of us.
