Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for May 23, 2015

Transcript:
Phoebe: Mom, Dad, I'm gonna go play outside.
Dad: Aw! C'mon, stay inside and play video games.
Phoebe: This better not be some kind of reverse psychology.
Mom: Quiet! You're gonna make me lose a guy.
I am reminded of a very old article in MAD Magazine – I mean very old – where the old rock-n-rollers have grown up and are disturbed by their children who have grown up to be “square” – responsible, neat, studious, the works. But joy is restored when their “rebellious” grandkids want nothing more than to be “hip.”
Comic strip parents often feel kind of dated. I think a lot of people base them on their own parents. And considering if you’re doing a comic strip you’re probably an adult yourself, you’re depicting parents of a different generation than a contemporary child would actually have. So instead I based Phoebe’s parents on my nerdy friends.

We seem to have a parenting fail here. Sure, have a LAN party every once in awhile, but let’s find a balance here.

If my parents had ever said this to me, I would fainted from shock. Video games in my childhood were usually only after homework was done.

Dana, thank you. You are totally correct about most comic strip parents. These two are a refreshing change.

I would have considered myself VERY lucky to have playful parental units.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
