As a teen-ager I went with my boyfriend on a date to Chicago’s Old Town one night. It was a magical place back then (the ‘60s), a real magic carpet ride. Had to go back down the next morning for something. That’s when I realized that what man makes is best seen in man-made light.

I just moved uphill closer to the mountains and I actually have a nice view of downtown at night. Definitely a real reason to go outside.

I totally agree with you, Mari. I love looking at the lit-up cities at nighttime, especially from far, far away:

No comparison to the amount of stars blotted out by that light. We miss the Arm of Orion, one of the galactic arms of our galaxy.

It’s rather like the Gulliver syndrome: everything looks prettier when it’s seen from a distance…
(Sorry: Zappa’s “City of Tiny Lights” just popped into my head…) 7@=Q
