It’s not that tough, really. You “lie” down, or you “lay” something down. Just like you “sit” in a chair, but you “set” something on a table. You should no more be able to confuse the two words than “sleep” and “slip”. The real problem is that the past tense of “lie” is “lay”. Whoever dreamed up that part was a troublemaker.
