If you want to know what a phone booth is, Nelson, go on a trip to England. I saw those with my brother almost three years ago. (“Where’s England,” asks Nelson.)
We have one working phone booth in our little town. I don’t know how it has survived, why the phone company leaves it there. The booth doesn’t have a door but the rest is still there for those that need.
When I was in Japan (a bit over 10 years ago) I saw quite a few of phone booths in Tokyo. What I thought was interesting was that they were wireless, no cables running to them but an antenna on the top. That and they weren’t vandalized in any way.
Vegas Viper, I have a land line. When I called to have it disconnected, the phone company wouldn’t do it. They have me keep it in case I need to call 911 if/when my cell phone isn’t working. I can get incoming calls at no cost, but if I call out, then I’m charged so many cents/minute for the call.
People used to dash down the street in a rain storm, looking for a phone booth to shelter in. Now people stand out in the rain storm trying to get a signal. And remember the scene, in the first Superman movie starring Chris Reeve, where Clark Kent is running about looking for a phone booth in which to change. He finds a pay-phone in an on the wall shelter, so he dashes through a revolving door to change into the tights & cape.
I remember seeing Underdog(Shoeshine Boy) using them in order to become Underdog. Mort Meek (of Chips Ahoy!) used them to become Cookie Man. And in the Harlem Globetrotters’ Popcorn Machine Saturday morning kids’ show, a basketball would roll into a phone booth and become Super Trotter.
The dentist I work for and I were talking about 45’s and the kid in chair thought we were talking about guns. I once told my nephew it looked like he had combed his hair with an eggbeater. You got it, “what’s an eggbeater?” So many things we knew about, used and played with they have no idea what we’re talking about. Suppose it’s the same for all generations. Though I think we’re advancing more rapidly technology wise than we used to. Guess I’ll just go play with my Spirograph.

Poor Superman probably has to use dirty public restrooms now to change.

From the outside, it looks like the TARDIS, sort of. Youth is wasted on all the wrong people.

I’ll always associate phone booths with Get Smart. And Superman.

we have one payphone nearby attached to the wall outside of the McDonalds. The kids love to play with it.
