    Usually the depth of the tv was within an inch of the diagonal measurement.

    Edit: originally Cathode Ray Tubes (the screen) were round. Manufacturers started framing them in a cabinet so they looked square, but the measurement from corner to corner was closest to the real “width” of the screen. Tubed CRT’s are still measured this way.

    Supersurfer, I dread replacing my old TV for that very reason. At least the 1970s-vintage RCA console set I took to Goodwill back in the late ’80s was big enough to stand up on one edge and “walk” out to the truck.

    The TV’s they are making now were promised to us in the 6o’s !!!! And the 2 way video phones, too! (Just not portable).
