Those were my Granddad and Dad’s days before they before they started using profanity or political correctness in westerns. You try to find a decent western today without them cursing in it. Today’s westerns would put The Singing Cowboys to shame.
I watch Burns and Allen and then The Beverly Hillbillies every morning before leaving for work. It’s a sure fire way to get my day off to a good start.
I’m not sure if I’ve seen any of the Randolph Scott movies, but I remember in Blazing Saddles when the sheriff is trying to rally the people of the town he says, “You’d do it for Randolph Scott” and they all remove their hats in tribute.
Scott was sledom a cowboy actor, not a lawman actor. He played teamster, newspaper publisher, and a lot of other western roles that no other lead played. He was also enherited an haute couture house in Roberta (the operetta), fameous for people counting the number of times he said, “swell!”.
There was sometimes a history lesson in Gunsmoke, like when the railroad bought up everybody’s land. The one that stuck in my mind was the episode where the town is suffering as the well goes dry. Now that the west coast is living that nightmare again, we understand how people felt back then.
Take your pick. Here are the top 100 Western Movie Stars:John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, James Alness, Gary Cooper, Steve McQueen, James Stewart, James Garner, Lee Van Cleef, Robert Duvall, Lee Marvin, Henry Fonda, Richard Boone, Clint Walker, Chuck Connors, Randolph Scott, Jack Elam, Charles Bronson, Ben Johnson, James Coburn, Walter Brennan, Roy Rogers, Eli Wallach, Sam Elliott, Dean Martin, Lorne Greene, Barbara Stanwyck, Ward Bond, Robert Mitchum, Dan Blocker, Burt Lancaster, Tom Selleck, James Drury, George “Gabby” Hayes, Michael Landon, Glenn Ford, Kevin Costner, Joel McCrea, Robert Fuller, Jack Palance, William Holden, Yul Brynner, Harry Carey, Jr., Robert Conrad, Kirk Douglas, Pernell Roberts, Doug McClure, John McIntire, Lee Majors, Lee J. “Oh good, an episode I haven’t seen!” This is when “age-related memory issues” actually come in handy!

I have a fair number of “Western” films on DVD, along with a huge collection of Alfred Hitchcock films and TV series.
I watch one or more of them occasionally when I need a diversion…
