When I was 14 my parents went away for Labor Day weekend, as they did every year. This year, my younger brother stayed with my grandmother and my older brother stayed with friends (the 4 oldest siblings were all out on their own), and I got to stay home alone. The thought of being upstairs in my room in that empty house all alone was more than I could bear, so I slept on the pullout couch in the living room. There, I was fine.

To this day I still get an uneasy feeling whenever I hear a ‘creak’ when I’m alone in the house at night.

A clever idea, but not well-executed. Ms. Barrows certainly became a better artist over time.
