I’ve never figured out why someone would plug a computer’s power cord into a plug that’s controlled by a wall switch. I know it happens, but I’ve never figured out why.
It’s nice to be able to turn the light on with a wall switch when you enter a room, and, when the time comes to change the lightbulb, it’s nice to have a floor lamp rather than a ceiling fixture (especially for the old and infirm among us). So it can definitely be convenient to have a wall switch control one or more electrical outlets. Remembering that the lights have to be on for rarely-used desktop electronics to work can indeed be tricky, though. (I assume that if Tess were accustomed to using this computer every day, she would have turned on the wall switch without thinking about it.)

Don’t feel bad. My #1 rule with computer trouble is its ALWAYS something remarkably simple and completely non-intuitive.

We have many such outlets in our house. Sometimes it drives me crazy.

I’d never seen plugs on wall switches till I moved to Australia. I do find them handy though!
