When I was in elementary school every teacher I had would ad “Mc” to our last names on St. Patrick’s Day. My last name was long enough without the added syllable so I always found it annoying. Also, I’m not even the littlest bit Irish, and there was never a day to celebrate my family’s heritage (French and Aboriginal Blackfoot). Result: I NEVER wear green on that day and won’t to this day. (Not orange either; I don’t ask for trouble & the only color uglier than orange is yellow.) When my girls started school I let them choose whether they wanted to or not; they usually didn’t.
