Dio: I'm Dio from Prickly City, Mr. President, and I was wondering....in your first term, federal government spending rose 33 percent! So, do you still consider yourself a real Republican? George W. Bush: Is this a trick question? Dio: Didn't used to be.
When was this not a trick question? Federal spending rose in Reagan’s and Nixon’s first terms too. The first Eisenhower (whom many Republicans considered not a real Republican) term didn’t change federal spending much (although spending did rise in his second term). The fact is, Republicans in power have NEVER opposed large government!
