Subprime education is like a subprime mortgage, the scammers don’t care if you keep the house or graduate or learn anything, you’re just a pawn in their money-leveraging game. Diploma mills & con men have been around for a long time, and buying friends in government to protect you has a long history too - that doesn’t make it right.

Subprime wars in Afghanistan & Iraq are now “under water” & will have to be written off, but have we learned anything? Do we ever learn anything?

Gitmo may not be better than San Quentin in any other way, but if you want to hold random Afghan goatherds forever without charges & without evidence, it is “out of sight.”

The guy who hadn’t heard the news about Clarence Thomas also needs to read some history – the main impetus for the Constitution was to strengthen the new federal government, not to limit it.

If you made fun of the Old Testament God, you got boils, lightning bolts, and your goats died.
Since we can now make fun of Mr. God & nothing happens, it’s pretty good evidence he doesn’t exist. Proof is in the pudding.

“Bush was President. But he was not in power.”
Yeah right, and Clinton wasn’t in power either, and neither of course was Barney Frank. Take off your partisan blinders & notice that both parties bent over backwards from the 80’s onwards to please the banks and hedge funds and those who GOT RICH from the credit bubble.
Just follow the money, and it’s pretty obvious who maxed out our credit cards and is now putting the rest of us on a diet. (Goldman Sachs etc.) They play, we pay.

Historical footnote: In World War I, many recruits from the French countryside spoke only local patois, not French, and literally did not understand their officers orders (per Graham Robb in “The Discovery of France”). Of course they all got slaughtered anyway, regardless of their language skills - c’est la guerre!

Geekologist, I absolutely agree with you that deregulation and lack of supervision from the SEC were big factors in letting the greed and fraud get out of hand.
My point to DeeBerg was specifically regarding the CRA: (1) that it did NOT apply to the mortgage service companies (2) that it seems to have taken 27 years for the alleged cause-and-effect to suddenly kick in - which seems unlikely, don’t you think?
Though the “grayhaired” commenter might deny it, there really is such a thing as racism.
To argue (1) that poverty is purely a matter of individual decisions, caused by spending too much on malt liquor, and (2) that blacks and hispanics make FOUR TIMES as many bad decisons as whites – well, that just tells me that someone’s personal circle of acquaintances doesn’t include a representative sample of whites, blacks, and hispanics.
But, grayhair, even if you don’t personally know any blacks or Latinos, just ask yourself if Donald Trump’s wealth owes more to his high IQ & brilliant decision-making, or to inheriting $400 million form his daddy. Then just extrapolate a little bit.
