The country was divided. Not only the history books but the literature show the division. One powerful piece is Stephen Vincent Benet’s “nightmare at Noon”, 1940 or 1941"—-pre Pearl Harbor. Benet was in favor of getting in, but depicting the divided nature of the country. Once we were attacked at Pearl Harbor, the emotion and the dynamic changed.
They are all re-prints. The stri stopped production of new strips at Schultz’s retirement and death. This one is an example of why they are still syndicated—-so timeless.
Except in Texas, which did away with Ds in the 80s, D IS passing. It is a myth that it isnt, probably because families often consider it unacceptable from their kids—-and may ask that it not be honored as passing but it means below average and it is passing. Even colleges give credit—-passing—-for a D, but may require a C AVERAGE to confer a degree. C means average, B is above average, and A is excellent.
I have taught middle school and high school English for over 30 years. Not turning in work, even completed work, is the most common cause of low grades. Even one of ny daughters had that problem. Even in my class. A B average is fine. For lots of reasons.
The strip is interesting. The comments not so much. I m taking it off my menu.
