Scrooge’s greed was borne out of a lack of love for his fellow man/woman. He closed his heart to those who showed compassion for others. Dickens pretty much said so, and since he wrote the story, I’ll take his word for it.
It’s kinda been done. A good portion of Pink Floyd’s classic album (and eventual movie) The Wall take place in the main character’s hotel room, where he’s slowly succumbing to a mental breakdown while watching television, among other things. I’m sure a writer worth their ink could come up with an interesting story.
