IF you really think about it, in all strips which one is really Calvin and which one is really Hobbes if you think of it along the lines of a boy and his stuffed tiger playing?
Let’s see…vehicles that get much better gas milage, pollute less, go for tens of thousands of miles with no tune ups with engines that for the majority last hundreds of thousands of miles without needing rebuilds compared the the vehicles of old that polluted heavily, got an average of 12 miles to the gallon, had to be tuned up every 20 thousand miles and would usually require major engine work after 100,000 miles. And that’s not factoring in the huge advances in passenger safety.
There’s other plants that have pride in their workmanship also, not just the good ole’ southern boys. And the UAW is very small portion of the Big 3s problerms right now. A 300% increase in the cost of raw materials over 4 years, a huge increase in the cost of healthcare plans, an increase in the cost of material transportation and the credit crunch are all things that have a much higher factor in the Auto industry problems than UAW worker wages. Yes, the UAW can loosen some of the job classification work rule restrictions and take on more of the costs of the healthcare to help, but it’s definitely not all on the UAWs head.
