I’m not sure that he knows about his son’s problems. His reaction is in response to Tracy addressing him by his family’s original name. I think it’s fairly safe to assume that he had hoped to no longer have people associate him with the family member who worked for Hitler in the past.
I think that nearly every story is slow when it’s split into daily chunks. We’ve become a culture that routinely watches an entire season of a TV show in one day. We’ve forgotten how to read in small daily installments if we ever knew.
It might be a time for “Thumper’s Law” from Disney’s Bambi: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” There is a place for constructive criticism, but beating yourself up constantly isn’t going to do you much good.
