As stated by several others, trebuchets are a type of catapult. There are four (some will argue five) basic types of catapults: trebuchets, ballistas, onagers and mangonels. Bearing in mind that Chinese siege artillery designs are susbstantially different from medieval European artillery designs, Wiley’s cartoon depicts a torsion mangonel that is missing a few important pieces.

Hey that’s the dog from B.E. — Before Eve — he always looks like that. No big deal. He’s just naturally happy dog.As for the item Larry is standing behind, that’s a lectern, not a pulpit — no raised platform so it can’t be a pulpit.

Is anybody a basketball fan? I don’t know anyone who is or ever has been even vaguely interested in the game . . . and I know a lot of people who consider themselves to be sports fans. But they can’t lower themselves to class basketball as a sport. The TV ratings suck so badly that I must assume the only people who watch it are bookies and gamblers.

Not bellweather, bellwether. A bellwether is a castrated ram (wether) wearing a bell in order to lead a flock of sheep — therefore a “leading indicator”. The “by” is pronounced as “bee” so the whole becomes bellwether be good and is a allusion to an event leading to a positive change and has nothing to do with sailing.
