   Or maybe a remarkable number of mothers think their daughters should be doing more with their lives than worry about whether how they smell will fetch them a man?

   I’ve been deeply perplexed by this whole storyline. Isn’t Michael still in elementary school? Kids don’t dance at elementary school dances; they run around shrieking like maniacs.

   Even in middle school, most the kids don’t do anything that remotely resembles dancing. Sixth-graders run around the outer ring of the gym, chasing each other. Seventh-graders clump together in the middle ring of the gym, talking and getting into weird emotional outbursts. And eighth-graders cluster in the middle, waiting for any nearby teachers to avert their eyes so that the students can grind on each other. I guess you could call that dancing?

   At least, that’s what I observed at the dances I chaperoned when I was a teacher.
