As part of a 2-week vacation in Australia in 1986 we spent a couple of nights in Alice Springs. The first day we went to Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park and in late afternoon got chased back to Alice Springs by a desert storm. The next morning, we went to Uluru. The hail from the storm was still piled up 12-18” against the rock. Back then you could still climb the rock, but my wife said, “no way in he**,” so we didn’t. Instead, we learned about eating desert grubs. This time, I said “no way in he**.” Anyway, it was a great trip and I’d do it all again if I could. Side note, coming from northern Minnesota, Alice Springs was my first encounter with giant flying cicadas, giant slow-flying bus-sized insects with red eyes that would run into you if you didn’t get out of the way. Now living in North Carolina, it’s “been there – done that,” no big deal. If you get the chance to go, do it. You’ll not be disappointed.
