It is a reference to the Biblical Story, Jonah and the Whale. Basically Jonah was called by God to go to Nineveh, he did not want to go and tried to dodge God by running away. He ends up on a ship, ship gets caught in a huge storm. The crew decides that the only way to calm their gods is to sacrifice Jonah by throwing him overboard. They toss him overboard, Jonah is swallowed by a huge fish or more commonly it is stated a whale. Three days later he is spit up on land.
I think that is the tie or reason by it. Jonah in the strip is dodging his responsibilities just like Biblical Jonah.
Gunther needs to straight out tell Bernice how he feels. Bernice needs to wake up and realize that nice guys like Gunther, are priceless. I married a Gunther type guy. My heart wanted adventure, my head wanted stability. Glad my head won over my heart. Maybe Gunther just needs to be honest with her.
I think Bernice and Gunther would be a better matchup. Past history, similar personalities, Maybe they could loosen each other up. Piro seems perfect for Tiff, dark, edgy perfect pairing with the beauty queen.
