It turns out that in 1974, there was a trial run of year-round DST in the United States which began on January 6, 1974 and ended on April 27, 1975 (with a brief period of standard time from October 27, 1974 to February 23, 1975). This experiment was prompted by the 1973 OAPEC oil embargo as a means of conserving energy.
