It appears that Gunther has decided that he has time to MAKE a dress for Luann – and not incorporate a dress DESIGN into his engineering assignment. Remember that it was Luann’s idea to combine the two, as a means to get Gunther to make her dress. Since Gunther had that moment to reflect, he realized the folly of “redesigning” a dress.
.
Well, at least that’s what I hoping has happened off-panel between yesterday and today …

Here, here!
.
I’m an engineer by profession, and I personally resent the cheapening of my profession by Mr. Greg Evans with a made-up definition so that the creative desires of a needy Luann will fit the presented plot.

I can not imagine an engineering course, taught to ABET standards, where the student is allowed to choose a course project without first presenting said proposed project to the instructor for review and approval to proceed.
.
The problem here is that Greg Evans, with his limited experience of things outside of the art and artist world, has the misconception that ALL university courses are taught in the same manner as art classes – i.e., project and subject given to student, student turns in result after specified time w/o periodic review and evaluation, as would be the case with an engineering project.

Note that Gunther said “we” … most, if not all, engineering design class projects, after one’s freshman year, involve a TEAM. At this point of your academic career in engineering, working with others becomes as an important learning experience as the producing actual results for the assignment.
.
My point is that Gunther would have to get a buy-in from all the other members of the design team that their everyday item would be a bride’s maid dress. 100% guarantee that is not going to happen. Yes, as Argythree stated, an excellent opportunity for Gunther to say “no”.

My thought exactly … Team Evans always wanted the “wedding” to be on 9/11 … but there was such a rejection from the readership that they retreated to some far-off December date. But that was just a red herring …
They rebooted with Toni having the emotional breakdown of planning a circus wedding of Brad’s dreams …
So, Team Evans divert to the elopement solution that … wait for it … becomes reality on September 11 …
Right now, there is a Sunday 09/11 panel heading for Sunday Comics creation file for that date …
You can bet on it …

I was thinking that they work at the same, since they only sat before one Captain to find a mutually agreeable date for the wedding. Each Station has their own Captain, so given the single Captain conversation implies working at the same station. I would imagine that Brad & Toni need to speak to the city Fire Chief, who could direct the individual captains to coordinate the time on/off to ensure Shannon with parental coverage …

I realize that this was the initial conversation – and don’t expect the details to be hashed out in the time it took to walk from the car to Toni’s apartment …
If Luann is indeed taking place in California, then this is Luann’s last semester at the local JUCCO … CA state regulations state that you must make normal progress towards an AA degree – which is two years, unless you’re in a nursing program. Since Luann hasn’t indicated that she can not register for the classes for a degree, she’ll be dismissed come this June. She can re-apply as a continuing education student – but that places her at the end of the registration queue
