The National Football League has a Super Bowl each year, normally on the first Sunday in February. There are 32 teams – 16 in each conference – who play a 17 game Regular Season from September through December. Twelve advance to the Playoffs and play in three rounds, each with the loser’s season ending. (Four of the 12 teams get a ‘bye’ in the first week.) At the end, one team from each conference advances to the Super Bowl, which is annually one of the most watched events in the United States. (It is also watched by millions more outside the US.)
This year, the Philadelphia Eagles advanced to their third Super Bowl in 52 years. They had lost the previous two (in 1980 and 2005) Although a decent team on average through the years, the Eagles were not expected to make the playoffs in 2017. Instead, they finished with the best record in the NFL. Nonetheless, they were chosen as underdogs in both their playoff games. They won both and advanced to the Super Bowl, where they were chosen as underdogs to the perennial powerhouse, the New England Patriots.
But the Eagles beat the Patriots, winning their first Super Bowl. (The last Championship the Eagles had won was the 1960 game against the Green Bay Packers, five years before the Super Bowl was started.)
As a sports city, Philadelphia has a blue-collar, grind-em-out, leave nothing on the field, mentality. The fans are rough and tumble, very knowledgeable about their sports (football, baseball, basketball and hockey, primarily, though they have other teams), and have a multi-generational fanbase. The Philadelphia Phillies baseball team has been playing since the late 1800s; the Eagles since 1933.
This Super Bowl win is the first championship by a major Philadelphia team since the Phillies won the World Series in 2008. Over 700,000 people were at the Eagles parade. Nick Foles the backup (replacement) quarterback who led the Eagles to victory, will be loved and remembered by the fans for the rest of their lives.
