“a few Mongolian tourists”. I wonder if they were anything like the heavily-armed “tourists” who stormed, broke into and vandalized the U.S. Capitol and beat police officers on 1/6/2021…

Joe Martin is the cartoonist who gave us “Mister Boffo,” “Willy ’n Ethel,” and “Cats With Hands,” which are all very funny and clever strips.

If Flagee and Ribbon are popular when Americans are scared, then they must really be popular now! Out of the basement, boys!!!

So what if poking fun at an individual or group triggers angry letters to the editor – don’t people have a right to express their opinions? I don’t believe in “canceling” anyone over the slightest risque joke, but if you’re going to controversial, be prepared for backlash.

And sometimes you get justifiably fired. Not “canceled” – just fired. You’re still here, and you’re free to move on to something else, so you haven’t been “canceled.” But employers have rights too, and they don’t have to put up with everything you say or do.

To me, here’s the problem – the enormity of American slavery and its aftereffects cannot be fully calculated. This wasn’t just discrimination or bigotry; this was centuries of legalized, systemic, race-based forced labor and brutality, and that’s not even including the horrific conditions associated with being chained together and packed in like sardines on the slave ships crossing the Atlantic.

Even well after the end of slavery, local, state and federal government denied descendants of slaves equal justice and equal protection under the law, even though black people were not exempt from local, state and federal taxes. That’s why I’m more in favor of monetary support for black students and black businesses over some kind of payoff.

And one more thing about “happy” slaves – I would imagine the ones who projected a happy image knew that they had no choice but to accept their lot on life, and decided to make the best of it. Even house slaves didn’t automatically have it so good. Being right there in the house, they were often the main targets of the master’s anger and abuse.

When Lio grows up, he’ll realize that you do what you have to do to get what you want. And the more you want, the more you have to do to get it.

I appreciate the reasonable discussion, too, and that’s an interesting thought experiment. As an African American myself, I would absolutely decline that offer. It smacks of the old “go back to Africa” mentality. We black people have more than earned the right to be Americans; if reparations were issued (and I don’t think that will ever happen), there should be not such a condition attached.

I would like to see reparations issued in the form of something like college scholarships or paid trade school tuition, or specific tax breaks and grants for black businesses.

Either that, or be relegated to the bottom rung of society. Unfortunately, there are people who really feel this way. That’s why history – complete and verifiably accurate history – is so important.

    That’s rather profound…
