I had a friend who sold his printer before it ran out of ink, and using that money bought a new one. It ended up costing him less than letting it run out of ink and replacing the ink. I gave up on it years ago and started buying small monochrome laser printers, all I ever print is programming tutorials and needlework patterns. You can still get refills for laser toner.
