Why would you want an app to wake you at 3 A.M. if the earthquake didn’t?

That app would certainly be annoying – but nowhere near as annoying as having a toilet paper dispenser totally out of reach of someone on the toilet.

I’ve felt 2 earthquakes in my life. One in a suburb of New York City and one in Frankfurt, Germany. Both woke me from my sleep. The first one in the 1980’s left me in panic thinking the cold war had turned hot with an atomic bomb being dropped on New York. The second one had me trying to remember how much alcohol I had had the night before, until I realised what it was.

The 4am earthquake that woke me in Lake Tahoe, CA showed how confused I can be when waken. I was wakened by the sound of the closet doors rattling and thought it was my wife having trouble with the door key. Upon realizing she was next to me in bed I thought my daughter was doing something, but she was also in bed. It was getting louder and I realized someone was trying break in and I needed to defend my family and he was so determined to get in he was shaking the whole room. And somewhere between dreaming and awake I knew King Kong was trying to break down our hotel room door. Finally, I turned to wife who by now was also awake and asked what was going on. She looked at me like I was the biggest idiot in the world and said “it’s an earthquake”. I was finally awake enough to think and got everyone into the bathroom door way. I was a 6.2 and thanks to modern construction standards in the that part of the country, there was no major damage anywhere (the next month a 5.6 devastated parts of Mexico City).

A friend from southern California visited about 40 years ago and we traveled to Manhattan on the subway. She remarked that the rumbling as the train approached through the tunnel felt and sounded very much like something she was more familiar with—the start of an earthquake.

Several years ago we had a sizable earthquake that I slept thru. It woke my wife and the epicenter wasn’t too far from our home. A couple weeks ago we had a 4.3 that everyone felt except us. We were in our hot tub at the time and didn’t know we had an earthquake

Ha! Before cell phone apps we had to rely on the room shaking and things falling off the shelf to know what was going on.

Are we really at the point where we need an App to tell us what just happened? “You tripped and fell on your face… because you were looking down at your phone and not watching where you were going.”

So the app worked but he’s upset with it because it detected an earthquake that was small enough he could have slept through it… That seems like what you want such an app to do.

Mr. Wiggly: He is in the last panel. He is in a portrait of him done by no less than Reuben…Reuben Swartz.

The Real Wiggle Man is at the bottom next to the rubber-ducky, wondering why Weenus didn’t just remove the app instead of throwing his phone away.
