A long time ago, I adopted four budgerigars from an old Lady that couldn’t take care of them anymore. Born in captivity, they would have died if freed, so I used to close the window of my house and open the little door of theirs, and they flew and walked around for a while, explored – one regularly threw up – then, when tired, they went back inside by themselves. My cat Bibbo was always very nice with them and even allowed them to land on him. Too bad I can’t put pics here.
