My father always called the pollution control valve on his car the “PCV valve”. It drove me nuts.It’s a manifestation of RAS syndrome (Redundant Acronym Syndrome syndrome), which is a form of pleonasm.The next time you hear someone say that they went to the ATM machine but forgot their PIN number, tell them they’re suffering from RAS syntrome with incipient pleonasm, and make it sound ominous, like the HIV virus.
