Van Gogh cut off part of his left ear (think mirror-image when doing a self-portrait) not the right. It was during an argument with his best friend, nothing to do with his brother or a girl. Though there has been some speculation that his friend actually cut off part of the ear accidentally and he lied about it to protect him.
