When I was in high school back in the late 50’s the only foreign language they taught was Spanish. Most of us students thought, “Why Spanish?” We thought Chinese or Russian would be way more useful. So I guess our dull teachers were way more astute than we realized.
Ten years before, we could also take Latin instead, even though only one “country” has it as an official language and most there speak Italian instead.

I think a far more useful tool would be the ability to read lips or communicate in sign language…
In multiple languages, all the better!
