That’s why I always pay for materials only up front, then pay by the percentage of the work done. I use Craig’sList a lot and have had better luck with that than with established companies. They won’t work for you at all without money up front, and then they have five jobs going at a time and may or may not get back to you this season.

The strange part with my contractor was he put in the front stair railing and disappeared without ever getting final billing. Did a great job.
