It’s a comic strip and meant to be funny. Killing Rover off would be a tragedy which they could not make funny. I hope Red will make friends of other boys but Rover will always be his best friend and he will not die as he would eventually in real life.
Your telling me! That kid is gonna need one heck of a shrink to get him through the end of Rover. Dark and sad, but it happens. Happened to me 3×. Sucks.
Great thing about the comic strip world, it never has to end that way. Red never has to get older and Rover never leaves. That is what keeps us looking forward to this strip.

As a boy my best friend was a dog too. Definitely “man’s best friend”, but mentioning the idea of Rover being gone… too real man, too real!

I don’t like where this could be going.

maybe the arc will have Rover sick and has to stay at the vets for a while.

Not much of a punch line, more like a punch in the gut!

Can’t remember when Red and Rover weren’t in the strip.

Lady, don’t you believe in backup plans? Rover could get hit by a car any day. Don’t let Red put all his eggs in one basket.

I was actually just thinking this before she said it. :‘( The strip would not, could not be ’Red and Rover’ without Rover. :)

When Red and Rover started out he looked more like 7. I think he looks a little older than he looked in the earlier days. Do you think that is true?
