Most dogs face you before you throw the ball. Then, they will either jump up & down repeatedly in excitement; or hunch themselves slightly forward while their rear legs are tensed & ready to spring into action…this is all done while their front paws drum excitedly on the ground in front of them. Regardless of which path they choose, you can almost hear them repeating, “This is great! THROW THE BALL!!”

Retrievers are bred to fetch a bird that’s been shot (loud sound and bullet-explosive smell). That only leaves sight.

My Lab drops the ball then takes off to where she thinks it will be thrown before I get a chance to throw it again.
