Rover looks delighted; he must have just seen “The Time Tunnel” on MeTV.

A time machine would explain some of the anachronisms in this marvellous strip. A reference to Jaws (1975) may have been outside its time-frame. A reference to Alien (1979) was certainly outside its time-frame.

This cartoon is another reprint from 2019 as the great Brian Basset is still recovering from recent surgery. As I mentioned just now on Calvin and Hobbes, I have recently watched some Tom and Jerry cartoons from as recently as 2019. The originals were made in the 1940s and ’50s with some inferior ones made in the 1960s which Red would have seen when they were first shown in the cinema.

The one that I mentioned on Calvin and Hobbes was called “Farmed and Dangerous”. It reminded me of some of the classic cartoons. Tom was owned by a woman who owned a farm and she sent him to recover an egg stolen by Jerry. The egg soon hatched into a chick and both Tom and Jerry were protecting the egg from a fox. Tom returned the chick to his owner and was rewarded with food. He and Jerry were still friendly enough for Tom to share the food with Jerry.

That reminded me of the 1949 cartoon “Old Rocking Chair Tom” in which Tom and Jerry joined forces against a common foe. Tom ended up with his foot in a plaster cast but was rewarded with a pie by his owner and he and Jerry shared the pie.

Very good, you guys! And not all good things have to come to an end, such as your undying love for each other! And, yes, dogs die, but not comic book dogs!

With a nod to the late, great Yogi Berra…this sounds like deja vu all over again!

The last days or weeks of summer bought a unique sense of dread, that no other life experiences could duplicate. Just a unique sadness that disappeared after a few days of school.

If I had a time machine, I would zip into the future by a few centuries, and if it was like "Star Trek, The Next Generation on, that time machine would mysteriously break down stranding me in a Utopian future. And if it was some dystopian nightmare, I would flee back to my own time.
