Richard's Poor Almanac Super Bowl Commercials - a preview by Richard Thompson The most heartwarming commercial by far is Budweiser's Beer for Life. Promoting the health benefits of alcohol, it concludes by advising viewers to ask your doctor about about Bud. And we loved the one with God tossing Jesus the keys to his Land Rover. Besides answering the recent theological question about what he's driving these days, it was really cute. The spot for Porco di Mare, a local restaurant that spent its entire ad budget for the next 12 years on an eighth of a second commercial, it doesn't work. The montage of pasta dishes, happy diners & valet parking attendants passes too rapidly to leave any retinal image whatsoever. Finally, the endless series of ads for AT&T featuring the universally deserted comedian Carrot Top doing excruciatingly unfunny things is interesting only for the tiny line of type at the bottom of the screen stating that it was paid for by Verizon.
That explains a lot about AT&T—sadly my internet “provider”—when it works….
