The French horn was invented in Germany. The sailor Alexander Selkirk, marooned for 4 years alone on a desert island and the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe, had actually asked to be put ashore because his ship was unseaworthy- it later sank off the coast of Columbia. Research has shown that humans may make more rational decisions in the dark, as bright light can increase emotions.

Similarly with the German-made French horn, the Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) aren’t from the Netherlands, but rather the German-speaking regions of Switzerland; it’s just a misunderstanding of the High Central German dialect word for “German” (Deitsch) in English ears.

Not so sure about the dark thing. Many a regretted decision was made in the heat of the moment in the dark (if you know what I mean).
