The Day of Drunkenness was an ancient Egyptian annual festival celebrating grape vines and their harvest. Sailors traditionally had a pig and a rooster tattooed on either but because these animals often survived shipwrecks- possibly because they were kept in buoyant wooden crates. Henry III of France (1551-1589) had 2000 lapdogs and regularly wore puppies around his neck and a basket.
