The Morse code beacon harkens back to light houses, each of which has its own distinctive signal to work not only as a warning about dangerous waters but as a navigational marker. In the case of the Capitol Records building, it also helps distinguish the beacon from the landing signals at several small airfields in the Los Angeles area.
