    Pfatts: Actually they do, but that has nothing to do with when they know when to leave. I have noticed mass movement before the first major cold front arrives. I suspect other birds from nearer the pole, fly faster than than the front moves, and that tips them off, but have no peer reviewed evidence. “Geese overhead, we better get going.”

    Is this bird a cardinal? They’re winter time birds and look pretty alongside the bluejays and chickadees.

    I have heard that cardinals don’t migrate (back in IL I think mine stayed around year round). I find that I have some here seasonally in AZ and I LOVE to see them, also get some orioles. I do love the normal local birds too.

    Around here “the first robin of spring” is nonsense. They are here year round and flock in the winter. In fact, the main ones that migrate from here are warblers and hummingbirds which cross the Gulf of Mexico for the winter.
