When my niece was six, she told me, “Vanilla isn’t a flavor, Uncle Matt. It’s just plain. That’s why they call it ‘Plain Old Vanilla’!”. Then I had her try some chocolate chip cookies with no vanilla in the dough – that set her straight.
Two favorite flavors of vanilla. The vanilla soft-serve at Dairy Queen. And Yarnell’s “Angel Food” (they didn’t call it vanilla). They are both vanilla and are both different. I’m not sure Yarnell’s “Angel Food” is still available. It was only in a small area around the area where it was produced near Dardanelle Arkansas at the time.
Incidentally, my office had an ice cream social yesterday. I ordered vanilla and only afterward learned there were no toppings available. Still tasted pretty good.
I never knew vanilla was a flavor… not being gifted with a good sniffer, I couldn’t detect the flavor until I got some premium ice cream with strong vanilla taste.

Hmmm, 31 flavors of white ice cream. I wonder what state this is?
