According to my recall of the legend, Daedalus very carefully explained that he should NOT fly too high.

And the wax melted, and Icarus plummeted into the sea and drowned (if the impact didn’t kill him first)

This myth never made any sense to me. Greece had mountains and people climbed them to an extent. They had to notice that it did not get hotter but rather colder the higher they got.

Don’t forget to include the expression: The whole ball of wax

He was waxing poetic.

Most don’t know this but Daedalus had a competitor with inventions in his nephew talos. Daedalus was so jealous that he pushed his nephew to his death from top of a temple. Talos’s mom was inconsolable so she was changed into a gull by an unknown god. Of course this gull shrieked with joy when Icarus fell into the sea to his death
