The most important election of my lifetime was 1964 when America had a choice between limited or unlimited government and America blew it.

I had just completed three years with the Army and could not vote because I wasn’t yet 21. Later they amended the Constitution on the grounds that if they could send you to die in Vietnam, you should at least get to vote.

I remember the joke: “They told me that if I voted for Goldwater, we’d have a half-million troops in Vietnam. Well, I voted for Goldwater and darned if they weren’t right!”

Limited or unlimited government. That’s what this next election is about. Don’t blow it again, America.

Riiight… which one is the limited government?

The one that gives the rich all the corporate welfare they want, pours billions into the military rat-hole every year, starts wars, creates huge new government agencies that spy on Americans, tells you who you can marry, tells your doctor what care they can give you, wants to destroy every regulatory agency, and wants to get rid of all social programs?

Or is it the one that gives the rich all the corporate welfare they want, pours billions into the military rat-hole every year, starts wars, expands government agencies that spy on Americans, pays lip-service to the right to marry whomever you want, compromised on health care for the uninsured, and doesn’t want to eliminate regulatory agencies or social programs?

The next election is not about “limited” or “unlimited” government. Thanks to unfettered lobbyist money, anonymous campaign dollars, and the revolving door between government and industry, your choices are quite limited. You will have big government. You will have corporate welfare. You will have a regressive tax structure that benefits the rich. You will have wars. You will have US troops all over the world.

But, there is still a choice! You can have the government that shafts the poor, the working class, and the middle class. You can have the government that tells people they can’t get married. You can have the government that cuts the social safety net as the transfer of wealth continues unabated to the 1%, to the “job creators” that take your job overseas and leave you behind.

Or you can have the government that is trying (however poorly) to prevent the opposition from shafting the poor, the working class, and the middle class. Yadda yadda yadda…
