The idea of sex outside of procreation is anathema to most religions because that would tend to limit all those tiny, little catholics, or baptists or methodists or muslims running around. Look how successful the “Shaker” movement of the 1800s was, with their total ban on sex, altogether!
The focus of the Catholic Church isn’t R&D; it’s promoting Catholicism. That’s where the funds go—that and charitable works, including healthcare. Did you know that without Catholic institutions, the US healthcare system would largely implode? There are a lot of Catholic hospitals, clinics, etc. out there.
That said, they do fund some scientific endeavors. There’s a papal astronomical observatory, for example. Check facts.
