In the second panel Gary is describing perfectly too many modern mothers. My wife taught second grade for over 30 years and too many times her students would confide in her some of those same conditions. Every year she would have at least one student that lived with their grandparents because, frankly the mother didn’t want them. Many of these stories would rip your heart out at what the children and the grandparents were going through. One little girl kept begging my wife to let her go live with us. Her grandmother was trying to raise the little girl and her two siblings but didn’t even had beds for her or the children. My wife talked with the grandmother and she was doing her best (much more than what most would try to do) and the mother was strung out on drugs somewhere up North. She refused to transfer legal custody to the grandmother which made is hard for the grandmother to get welfare benefits for the children. My wife finally had to retire before she had a total breakdown from all the sad stories that she constantly heard. This was at one of the more affluent schools in the district.
