Back when my friends and I were of trick/treat age, we had an early warning system. If someone was passing out “Circus Peanuts” or “Necco Wafers” we’d warn each other and avoid the place and let the newbs go there. One woman that was new to the neighborhood made the mistake of passing out boxes of Cracker Jack. There was a line of kids from her porch out to the street. (This was back in 1964)
