I believe it was because before they could switch on a light, homes were super dark at night, which meant lots of bumping into and tripping over things, causing injuries.
You guys are amazing to have figured this out. Probably right. Perhaps also the use of candles, wood fires and kerosene lamps resulted in accidental burns requiring medicinal salves…

well, I’l try : without light, you will bump your head… therefore, use liniment .
