I’ve heard that the reason women wear high heels is that it causes their calf muscles to tighten up leading to a more shapely leg.
I am an engineer who studied anatomy and I can tell you that high heels and the human body are incompatible with sustained structural integrity. The foundation is unstable and the shock of walking is transmitted directly up the spike into the wearer’s heel and up the leg bone as far as the spine. There is no “dampening” caused by flexing the foot.
I figure that high heels were invented by the Maquis de Sade. Had they been invented earlier they would have shown up in the historical record as instruments of torture in the Inquisition.
On my list of “101 Reasons I’m Glad I’m Not a Girl,” this one comes in at number 52.
One place where I noticed that women don’t wear heels a lot is in Montreal, women there have naturally-shaped calves. Maybe it has something to do with that mountain in the middle of the city.
