Many decades ago my father presented me with a compass that he carried during his time in the army during WWII. Later I threw it out during a cleaning spasm. I have always regretted that. Recently I’ve started thinking that if I’d kept that compass, I probably wouldn’t even remember what I’d done with it, but it’s appearance comes back very clearly whenever I think about how nasty I was to throw it out.

At his age, the attic and basement are probably full of it.
